Thanks to our best efforts to clean up the atmosphere, we have improved the environment in our fuels for microbiological attack. The growth of bacteria, yeast and mold in the industrial environment is often responsible for extensive losses in productivity. When populations of mold, yeast, aerobic bacteria, and anaerobic bacteria become elevated in stored hydrocarbon fuels, serious economic consequences can result. Problems related to high levels of microorganisms include slime formation, offensive odors, and plugging of fuel delivery lines and filters. Problems related to high levels of bacteria include corrosion, slime formation, foul odors and general decline of fuel performance.
Remember, the test is only as good as the sample taken. Bugs live at the fuel water interface; you need to know where to find this interface or your testing will result in a false negative or inconclusive.
