Microbial contamination in aviation fuel systems dates back to the 1950’s. For over half a century fungi and bacteria have consumed kerosene type fuels and have demonstrated their ability to survive the freeze and thaw cycles of the aircraft fuel systems during flight. Microbes enter aircraft fuel systems as a result of poor housekeeping, contaminated hydrant systems, separators and storage tanks. Microbial contamination undoubtedly creates biomats that clog scavenge systems, coats fuel quality indicator system (FQIS) probes, and leads to structural corrosion.
The only viable and economical solution to this recurring problem is Kathon® FP 1.5. Without equal, Kathon® FP1.5 is arguably the finest biocide available to the aviation market today eliminating microbial contamination from aviation fuel systems quickly so costly equipment can return to the flight line. Kathon® FP1.5 is dosed at 100 ppm by volume with a soak time of no more than 12-24 hours. Kathon® FP1.5 not only dissolves quickly into the water phase but also partitions into the fuel phase. This makes Kathon® FP1.5 twice as fast as and more cost effective than the next closest competitor in the aviation market, Biobor JF at dose rate of 270 ppm by weight and a soak time of 36-72 hours. Unlike Kathon® FP1.5, Biobor JF is so sensitive to water and moisture that excess moisture in the fuel system can render Biobor JF into glycols and boric acid.
Independent Studies performed by Rolls Royce have demonstrated that at four (4) times the recommended concentration, Kathon® FP 1.5 does not adversely effect the corrosion rates of superalloy metals exposed to high temperature engine combustion products; does not adversely effect thermal stability of the fuel; was completely soluble at use concentrations, and was compatible with metals and alloys found in aviation fuel systems. Kathon® FP 1.5 has obtained numerous
approvals from leading aircraft engines and airframe manufacturers. Furthermore, Kathon® FP 1.5 is one of only two biocides approved for use in aircraft by
IATA and is listed in the guide:
“Guidance Material on Microbiological Contamination in Aircraft Fuel Tanks”.
Kathon® FP 1.5 is available in Quart (FQS-7000-14TP), 1-gallon (FQS-7000-01TP), 5-gallon pail (FQS-7000-05), 30-gallon drum (FQS-7000-30), and 55-gallon drum (FQS-7000-55). Kathon® FP 1.5 has a curative treat rate of 1 gallon to 10,000 gallons of fuel. For small tanks please refer to the
Small Tank Treat Chart.
